Auth0 Dashboard SMS Multi-Factor Authentication Code Not Received

Overview

This article explains why Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) codes are not received via Short Message Service (SMS) and provides the necessary steps to resolve the issue. This occurs when a user attempts to authenticate with a one-time code sent via SMS, but the notification is never delivered to the configured phone number.

Applies To
  • Free Tier Tenants
  • Auth0 Dashboard Admins
  • SMS MFA
Cause

SMS MFA is only available for tenants attached to a paid subscription plan. Users on a free-tier tenant cannot receive SMS authentication notifications.

Solution

To resolve this issue, perform one of the following actions:

  • Upgrade the tenant to a paid subscription plan to enable SMS MFA.
  • Reset the MFA to allow the enrollment of a different factor. To request a reset, refer to Account Locked MFA Resets Requests.

Once the MFA is reset, the user may enroll in alternative methods such as:

  • Push notifications via Guardian.
  • OTP using an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, on a personal device.
