Auth0 Passkey Button Displays on iOS Devices Despite Autofill Configuration
Last Updated:
Overview
When an administrator configures an Auth0 database connection to use Passkeys with the Autofill user interface, the Passkey button still appears on iOS devices. This occurs because Auth0 displays the button as a fallback for devices that do not fully support WebAuthn Conditional User Interface (UI). Administrators must use custom code in the Universal Login template to resolve this, as no native toggle exists to hide the button.
The administrator configures the database connection with the Passkey authentication UI set to Autofill, Progressive enrollment enabled, and Local enrollment enabled. When opening Universal Login on an iOS device, or simulating an iOS device using browser developer tools, the Passkey button appears instead of relying solely on autofill.
Applies To
- Auth0
- Universal Login
- Passkeys
- iOS
Cause
Certain iOS versions and browsers lack full support for WebAuthn Conditional UI. When Auth0 detects a device or browser that does not support Conditional UI, Auth0 automatically displays the Passkey button as a fallback mechanism to ensure users can still authenticate successfully.
Solution
Why does the Passkey button appear on iOS devices?
The Auth0 Dashboard lacks a native configuration setting to hide the Passkey button specifically for iOS devices when the Autofill option is selected. The button functions as a necessary fallback for operating systems and browsers that do not support WebAuthn Conditional UI.
Custom Templates Remove the Passkey Button From Universal Login
Administrators can implement custom CSS or JavaScript within the Universal Login HTML template to hide the Passkey button.
